Cramlington Community High School, Northumberland Year 10
Science
Year 10 science students at Cramlington are currently benefiting
from their teachers' knowledge of Accelerated Learning methods in a
module on Electricity. The work has been designed to engage with
each of the intelligences and so allow every student access to
learning.
Using Alistair Smith's Accelerated Learning Cycle and current
research on Multiple Intelligences, the Cramlington science
department has planned lessons and complementary homework to
facilitate each learner's individual needs. The lessons incorporate
a range of activities designed to access each of the intelligences.
The students were given a questionnaire at the start of the
module that revealed each one's intelligence profile and how this
related to their learning. They were then able to use this
information about themselves to access the learning through their
dominant intelligence. Due to the variety of activities they were
also given the opportunity to learn in other ways as well, allowing
them to develop a 'portfolio of intelligences'.
The success of the project will be measured by comparing the
results of this module to others in the year and to other
Electricity modules in previous years. Progress of students towards
target grades will also be taken into account, as will qualitative
data from teachers and students. INSET days and videos of lessons
will be used for evaluation and future training.
