Pastoral Care

Every student at this school matters. We want them to enjoy their time with us, to feel secure and know that if they have a problem it will be dealt with. To ensure this we have an established system of pastoral care.

Three Learning Managers have overall responsibility for the care, discipline and academic progress of students in Y9 and are the first point of contact with parents.

After careful consultation with middle schools, all students are placed in a mixed ability tutor group of 25-28 students.

The Learning Managers’ role is to get to know each student on an individual basis and to establish a relationship whereby they can discuss issues and concerns in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect. The tutor meets the group on a daily basis and plays an important role in helping students to deal with issues as they arise. Tutors monitor academic progress, and hold individual interviews to agree targets for future progress.

A Smooth Transfer

Before students join us we will have consulted with their previous school. We aim to create a smooth transfer to ensure that we get the best from your child.

Regular meetings take place with our colleagues in middle schools to discover your child’s particular needs and abilities.

High School staff are involved in teaching in middle schools throughout the year especially in Science, Maths and Physical Education. This is an excellent way to start to get to know students.

Open Evenings in September and information evenings for parents of Y8 students in November and June at the High School provide ideal opportunities for parents to visit school and ask questions.

During the summer term Y8 students join us for a day in school. In this way they can meet students in their tutor group, sample Intensive Study lessons and find their way around the campus.

Working in Partnership with you

We are committed to working in partnership with parents to provide the best possible education for your child.

We keep you up to date with school news by regular newsletters, the LINK, the Crameltonian our school newspaper and our Internet site. We invite you to review and target setting interviews, provide progress reports and an end of year report.

We invite you to Awards Evenings, music and drama productions to celebrate achievement.

We run a ‘Parents in Partnership’ programmes with interesting topics eg How can I help my child revise.

We ask parents to:

  • Encourage your child to talk to you about school life.
  • Help your child to be organised, use their homework planner, bring the right equipment to school.
  • Encourage your child to complete all home learning tasks and to check homework planners. Encourage your child to join in after-school activities.
